Rail‑mounted container gantry cranes (RMGs) are the backbone of large container yards, stacking 40‑foot and 20‑foot boxes up to six high. Their steel portal frame runs on fixed rails, providing a stable platform that eliminates tyre‑related sway. The telescopic spreader adjusts automatically to container length, and its four twist‑locks engage the corner castings with hydraulic force, ensuring secure lifting even under gusty wind conditions. A load‑cell system in each twist‑lock monitors the weight distribution, preventing over‑tilt during unbalanced loads.
Precise yard mapping is achieved through a combination of global positioning references and onboard encoders that track the crane’s position along the rail and the trolley’s travel across the span. An anti‑collision radar system scans the surrounding stacks and other moving equipment, automatically slowing or stopping the crane if a proximity threshold is breached. The crane also features a spreader‑guidance camera that helps the operator align with containers that are slightly mis‑stacked.
For energy efficiency, the hoist and trolley drives use regenerative braking, feeding excess power back into the yard’s microgrid. An intelligent scheduler optimises job sequences based on vessel discharge plans, reducing empty moves and saving fuel (for diesel‑electric variants). The operator console provides a 3D digital twin view of the yard, allowing remote control from a central office. Maintenance logs are automatically generated, tracking wear on ropes, sheaves, and rail wheels. With a typical handling rate of 30‑35 moves per hour, RMGs significantly outpace rubber‑tyred gantries in high‑density terminals. Future developments include fully automated stacking with AI collision‑avoidance and predictive slot allocation.
